How to Line/Prep a Diamond
- Rake the field, ensuring that all divots are filled in and level out the batters box
- Grab the Lining cart, string, pitchers mound (if not already secured in the diamond), Bases, Batters Box guide (if you have one) and tape measure from the equipment box
- Remove the base plugs and insert all the bases into the correct holes
- Refer to the Attached Softball BC Plate Measurement GUIDE on this page (there should be one in the equipment boxes at the diamond), this will help guide you through some of the measurements
- Lay down the batters box template and press down to ensure that it leaves an imprint for you to follow. Remove the batters box template and repeat this step on the other side
- If your diamond does not have a template you will need to review the Softball BC Plate Measurement GUIDE to draw one out yourself
Batters Box Template
- Using the Lining Cart, draw your Batters Boxes
- Insert the nail end of the string into the point end of the Home Plate and run the string down the First Base line (see picture)
- Near the corner of the batters box, using the Lining Cart draw the line all the way down the base line (over top of the string guide)
- You can also use the spray paint (in the equipment box) to draw out an additional extension of the foul line on the grass to help the Umpires with their call
- Once you have lined the first base, repeat the same steps for the third base line (NOTE: There is no line between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd)
- With your nailed string at Home Plate, insert the end of the tape measure into the nail and run the tape measure to 2nd Base
- Using the Softball BC Plate Measurement GUIDE review the Pitching Mound distance (it you already have a secured Pitchers Mound you can skip this step)
- Put the front of the pitchers mound at the measurement that is listed on the Softball BC Plate Measurement GUIDE document for your division
- Nail in the Pitchers Mound with the attached nails
- Remove the tape measure from the nail, have a helper hold one end of the tape measure in the middle of the pitchers mound and draw a circle with the edge of the tape measure (the measurement of the circle will be based on your division and can be found on the Softball BC Plate Measurement GUIDE)
- Now that you have marked a circle with the edge of the tape measure (or nail) you are ready to draw in the line with the lining cart
- Using a nail, draw the batters "deck" one on each side (this is where the batter on deck will stand). These are positioned close to the fence at the end of the dugouts and are a 2.5feet radius (doesn't have to be exact)
- Now you need to add in the Coaches Box. These are added at the first and third base line (refer to the Softball BC Plate Measurement GUIDE document for measurements)
- The Coaches Box is 8 feet from the Foul Line at both 1st and 3rd base
- It runs down 15 feet and has a 3 feet line at either end facing away from the foul line
- Last line would be the Runners Lane. This is drawn at first base 3feet away from the foul line and 30feet down from the top of the first base. (Refer to the Softball BC Plate Measurement GUIDE document)
